Heel and trim

Heel is a vessel’s lean to one side, measured in degrees from upright. Trim is her fore-and-aft attitude—level, down by the bow, or down by the stern. As verbs, to trim also means to adjust the sails or the boat’s balance.

How it works

Heel is rotation about the fore-and-aft axis. Wind pressure on sails, a hard turn, or weight placed off-centre all heel a boat, and crew sitting to windward counters it. Trim is rotation about the athwartships axis: stores loaded forward put her down by the head, and a planing powerboat changes trim dramatically as she accelerates.

Both attitudes shape performance and safety. Heel and trim change the underwater shape, the steering feel, and how much freeboard remains where waves board. The verb senses are related but distinct: you trim a sheet to set the sail, trim the boat by moving weight, and trim an outboard by changing its drive angle.

One word, several controls

Trim entered sea language as the general act of putting things in proper order, which is why it survives in so many senses—trimming sails, trimming a boat by the stern, or the power trim on an engine. Heel kept the single meaning of leaning to one side, so the pair splits a boat’s attitude neatly between two axes.

On the water

  • A gust heels the boat; the crew moves to the windward rail and she comes back on her feet.
  • Two full water tanks aft leave the boat trimmed down by the stern and sluggish to steer.
  • Easing the mainsheet in a squall reduces heel faster than any weight shift.

Common mistake

Heeling is not the boat starting to capsize. A ballasted sailboat is designed to heel, and beyond a point extra heel only spills wind and slows her—though open dinghies and overloaded boats obey much less forgiving limits.
