What is the helm, and which way does a tiller go?

The helm is the apparatus by which a vessel is steered—her wheel or tiller—and, by extension, the person steering (“take the helm”). A wheel turns the way you want the bow to go; a tiller moves opposite to it.

How it works

A wheel behaves like a car’s: turn it to starboard and the rudder swings the bow to starboard. A tiller is a lever fixed directly to the rudder head, so it works in reverse—push the tiller to starboard and the rudder blade angles to port, taking the bow to port. Neither works well without water flowing past the rudder, which is why steerage fades as a boat slows.

Clear helm language prevents ambiguity when it matters. Modern orders name the rudder or the course—“starboard ten,” “steer zero-nine-zero”—rather than vague lefts and rights, and confident, timely helm work is what makes a Rule 8 alteration large and obvious enough for another vessel to read.

From tiller orders to course orders

Into the early twentieth century, big-ship helm orders named the tiller side: “port the helm” meant push the tiller to port so the ship turned to starboard. The reversal caused real confusion, and by the 1930s international practice switched to direct orders that name the rudder direction or the course to steer—the convention still used today.

On the water

  • “Take the helm and steer one-two-zero” hands over both the wheel and responsibility for that course.
  • In a tiller-steered dinghy, pushing the tiller toward the mainsail turns the bow up toward the wind.
  • A wheel-steered cruiser answers a turn of the wheel to starboard by swinging her bow to starboard.

Common mistake

The classic new-helm trap: pushing a tiller toward the side you want to turn. Push the tiller to starboard and the bow swings to port—only a wheel turns like a car.
